PITTSBURGH—The 2023 Pitt Football Blue-Gold Spring Game presented by M@C Discount came down to the wire at Acrisure Stadium, with the Blue Team prevailing by a 33-32 score.
Ahead of his ninth season as Pitt's head coach, Pat Narduzzi led his Panthers out in front of fans for the first time in 2023 with two new quarterbacks starting the game.
Playing primarily in the first half, Phil Jurkovec completed 5-of-7 passes for 51 yards, while fellow transfer QB Christian Veilleux went 6-for-9 passing for 74 yards with a touchdown pass to another transfer, running back Derrick Davis Jr., who scored on a third-down play from 12 yards out.
The Gold team, which was all offensive players, took an early 23-7 lead thanks to two touchdown drives and a kickoff return touchdown by Rodney Hammond Jr.
Veteran back Daniel Carter also found the end zone on a plunge near the goal line, while walk-on reserve QB Jake Frantl scored the other offensive touchdown of the game on a 14-yard scramble.
But Blue fought back and scored 16 unanswered points to lead after Phillip O'Brien Jr. returned an interception for a touchdown, and the defensive unit held on with a final stand on the last drive.
The Panthers return 13 starters and 50 lettermen from last season's Sun Bowl champion squad. For 2023 season-ticket information, log on to PittsburghPanthers.com or call (800) 643-PITT.
