PITTSBURGH – Head coach Jeff Capel was named as a finalists for the 2022-23 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year award as announced Tuesday by CollegInsider.com. The Jim Phelan Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top Division I coach, is named in honor of a legendary bow-tied coach who spent his entire career at Mount Saint Mary's University.
Phelan led the Mountaineers to the 1962 NCAA Men's Division II Basketball Championship. When he retired in 2003, after coaching for 49 years, he had amassed 830 wins (overall record of 830-524) in all divisions. In those 49 years, 19 of his teams amassed 20 or more wins in a season. The recipient of the 2023 award will be announced in March, in Houston site of the men's NCAA Basketball Championship.
Capel has guided Pitt to a 21-10 record overall and a tie for third finish in the ACC with a 14-6 league record in his fifth season leading the Panther program. Pitt opens play at the 2023 New York Life ACC Tournament Wednesday, March 8 against Georgia Tech (2:30 p.m. – ESPN).
Pitt's 10-win improvement from last season is tied for the fourth best in program history, while its 8-game win increase in conference play is a school record. The Panthers have also set school records for ACC wins (14), three-point field goals (292), and three-point attempts (811).
