PITTSBURGH – As the calendar shifts to March, the Pitt winter programs turn their attention towards postseason accolades. This past week, Nino Bonaccorsi and Cole Matthews from wrestling along with Sophie Yendell from Swimming & Diving have earned PNC Achievers of the Week after a couple of Individual ACC Championships and NCAA Championship qualifications.
Bonaccorsi became the first wrestler in ACC history to win three consecutive individual championships at 197 pounds this past weekend, defeating No. 25 Michael Battista (Virginia) and No. 8 Isaac Trumble (NC State) on his way to the title. The Bethel Park native joins Jake Wentzel as the only three-time ACC champions in program history and will compete in the NCAA Championships from March 16-18 in Tulsa, Okla.
Yendell did not compete this past week but was awarded with a pair of impressive accolades, qualifying for the NCAA Championships and earning a place on the Academic All-District Team. She earned her spot at NCAAs in the 50-yard freestyle after posting an impressive 21.89 time at the ACC Championships back in February. She left the 2023 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships with her name on six school records. The Tamworth, England native continues to break her own school records, as she broke the 50-yard freestyle record and claimed school records in the 100-yard butterfly (52.62), and the 100-yard freestyle (49.07). She joins freshman Claire Jansen as the first women's duo to qualify for NCAAs in five years. Jansen and Yendell will compete in the 2023 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, March 15-18, at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn.
Matthews earned his second consecutive ACC Individual Championship at 141 pounds, becoming the first repeat winner in the weight class since 2017. He overcame No. 12 Tom Crook (Virginia Tech) and No. 5 Ryan Jack (NC State) in a couple of tight decisions to claim the title. The Greenville product will return to the NCAA Championships as the No. 3 ranked wrestler in his weight class, hoping to earn another All-American selection.
