The Hokies plated 20 runs on 13 hits and drew 11 walks while the Panthers scored 12 runs on 11 hits and walked eight times. Both teams hit four home runs apiece.
Justin Acal hit two home runs for Pitt, his second two-homer performance of the season. Sky Duff hit his first round-tripper of the year, and Brett Heckert homered for the first time as a Panther.
Virginia Tech scored the game's first run on an RBI ground out in the second, but Acal tied the game in the third on a leadoff home run.
The Hokies took a 3-1 lead on a two-out, two RBI double in the fourth, but Pitt pulled within one when CJ Funk scored on a fielder's choice.
Unfortunately for Pitt, Virginia Tech proceeded to score 17 runs over the game's final five innings. The Panthers did score 10 runs of their own over the contest's final three frames, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Hokies.
Pitt posted a seven-run bottom of the seventh in which Duff hit a two-run homer and Acal later hit a three-run bomb. The Panthers scored again in the eighth on a Noah Martinez RBI double. In the ninth, Heckert hit a two-run homer to drive in the game's final two runs.
Duff, Martinez, Acal and Jayden Melendez each finished with two hits to lead Pitt's bats.
Pitt will take on Virginia Tech again on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the rubber match of the three-game weekend series.
