Panthers Drop Home Opener to Virginia

PITTSBURGH – Pitt dropped its 2023 home opener to Virginia, 9-0, in five innings at Vartabedian Field, Friday afternoon. The Panthers fall to 14-12 on the season and 0-4 in conference play.
Graduate student Yvonne Whaley totaled two of the Panthers four hits, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double. Sophomore Haylie Brunson (1-for-1, BB) and junior Cami Compson (1-for-2) each picked up a hit with back-to-back singles in the bottom of the second inning.
The Cavaliers scored in each of the five frames en route to victory and totaled eight stolen bases against the Panthers.
Freshman pitcher Eden Bingham (7-4) earned the win for Virginia while redshirt-sophomore Dan Drogemuller (5-5) was saddled with the loss.

Pitt continues its three-game series against Virginia tomorrow at 2 p.m. on ACC Network. The Panthers and Cavaliers wrap up the home stand Sunday at 12 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
