KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Sophie Yendell finished 18th overall in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.02 during the second day of competition at the 2023 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championship at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center early Thursday afternoon.
The 18th place finish is the highest finish at the NCAA Championship from a Pitt women's swimmer since Lina Rathsack scored and earned Honorable Mention All-American status in the 100-yard breaststroke in 2017.
"We are super proud of Sophie and all of the hard work she has put in this year to be at the National Championships and compete at the highest level for Pitt," said head coach Chase Kreitler. "A year ago, she was a 22.52 in the 50 free leading off the 200 Free Relay at ACCs, 22.81 (ACC Prelims) and 22.71 (ACC Finals). In the last month she has posted times of 22.00 (ACC Prelims), 22.04 (ACC 200 Free Relay Lead Off), 21.89 (ACC Finals) and now to be 22.02 in the prelims of NCAAs, her first NCAA swim ever, was fantastic! She has been incredibly consistent in her training and all of that hard work has shown up in her performances. As a program we are celebrating all the wins along the way as we move up in the ACC and NCAA and having our highest individual event finish (18th) at NCAAs in the last 6 years is a huge step in the right direction. We are looking forward to more great events this week and the future of our women's swimming & diving program!"
