THE OPENING TIP
• Pitt (23-11, 14-6 ACC) posted a hard-fought 60-59 win over Mississippi State Tuesday night in a First Four matchup to advance to the NCAA Tournament Greensboro Regional. The Panthers now face 6Iowa State (19-13, 9-9 Big 12) Friday, March 17 in a 3:10 p.m. tipoff at the Greensboro Coliseum with Ian Eagle, Jim Spanarkel, and Evan Washburn calling the action on truTV.
• The Panthers are making their 27th NCAA Tournament appearance and their first under head coach Jeff Capel. Pitt is 25-27 all-time in NCAA Tournament play, including a 4-4 mark when placed in the Midwest Region. Capel-led teams are 5-3 in NCAA Tournament action.
• Pitt is 104-112 all-time against teams currently in the Big 12, including a 1-3 mark in NCAA Tournament action.

• Blake Hinson, a Second Team All-ACC pick, has posted 29 double-figure scoring games, including 19 games with 15 or more points and nine 20+ point games. He is the only player in the ACC averaging 15.5 or more points (15.5 ppg.) and 6.0 or more rebounds per game (6.1 rpg.) with 85 or more made threes (93 3FG).
BY THE NUMBERS
• Jeff Capel was named ACC Coach of the Year, becoming just the third coach in program history to garner conference coach of the year honors. He has also been named NABC District 2 and USBWA District II Coach of the Year and is among the candidates for the Naismith National Coach of the Year award.
