TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Jayden Melendez homered but the Pitt baseball team (7-8, 0-2 ACC) dropped a 5-3 decision to Florida State (11-3, 2-0 ACC) Saturday at Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium in the second game of the ACC series between the two teams.
Trailing 5-2 heading into the ninth inning, the Panthers attempted to mount a comeback. CJ Funk and Noah Martinez got things started by drawing back-to-back one-out walks. One out later, Kyle Hess sent a base hit back up the middle to drive in Funk and make it a two-run game. Justin Acal then drew a walk to load up the bases with two outs for Pitt. The Panthers were unable to cash in, however, as a strikeout ended the game.
The Seminoles jumped out to four-run lead in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of two walks and three hits.
Pitt starting pitcher Kyle Mosley settled in after the first, retiring the side in the third, fourth and fifth innings. He gave way to Ethan Firoved with one out and one on in the sixth. Melendez picked off a runner at third for the third out of the inning to help get the Panthers out of a jam.
Melendez then got the Panthers on the board with one out in the seventh, belting his second home run of the season over the left field wall. Sky Duff followed with a walk, then Martinez singled to center, and Jack Anderson drew a walk one out later to load the bases for Pitt. Hess then coaxed a walk to score Duff and make it a two-run game. The Panthers could not continue to add on, though, as they left the bases loaded.
Florida State pushed across a fifth run with two outs in home half of the seventh, scoring on a Pitt throwing error.
Hess led Pitt at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two walks and driving in two of the Panthers' three runs.
Mosley fanned three over a season-long 5.1 innings of work. Firoved struck out two and did not allow an earned run over 2.2 frames of relief.
Pitt will face Florida State in the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
