PITTSBURGH—The surging Pitt wrestling team, ranked a season-best No. 17 in the NWCA Coaches Poll this week, flies to Raleigh for a crucial Atlantic Coast Conference dual at No. 6 NC State on Friday night.
The Panthers (9-3, 3-0) pace the ACC dual standings after dominant wins over Virginia, Virginia Tech and North Carolina put Keith Gavin's team atop the league. Pitt can clinch an ACC dual title for the first time since 2014 with a win at NC State, but the Wolfpack (12-1, 2-1 ACC) want to retain their crown.
Pitt's last month, which included four dual wins and a loss on criteria to No. 3 Iowa State, has put the college wrestling world – and especially fans and followers of the ACC – on notice.
Friday's dual presents another opportunity for Pitt to prove its quality this season; however, the match against NC State's lineup full of 10 ranked wrestlers might be the Panthers' toughest test yet.
Pitt enters this week with eight ranked individuals, including newly minted No. 1 Nino Bonaccorsi, who is the only undefeated wrestler at 197 pounds this season. No. 3 Cole Matthews at 141, No. 6 Micky Phillippi at 133 and No. 10 Dayton Pitzer at heavyweight also pace the Panthers.
Depth throughout the lineup will prove crucial this week, as ACC Wrestler of the Week Luca Augustine at 174 pounds, No. 28 Tyler Badgett at 149, No. 32 Colton Camacho at 125 and the Heller brothers – No. 17 Reece Heller at 184 and No. 24 Holden Heller at 165 – need to perform well on Friday night.
The Panthers are 2-7 against NC State in duals since joining the conference in 2013-14, but did win at Reynolds Coliseum as recently as 2019 and are familiar with success in Raleigh, with multiple Pitt wrestlers winning ACC titles when NC State hosted the conference championship in 2021.
The Pitt-NC State dual is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start on Friday on ACC Network Extra. Fans can watch on ESPN3.com and the ESPN app with an ACC Network subscription.
