
Panthers Outlasted By #16 Duke On The Road Thursday

DURHAM, NC – The Pitt women's basketball team (7-15, 0-11 ACC) fell on the road Thursday night to #16 Duke by the score of 53-44. Senior Emy Hayford led the Panthers in scoring with 12 points in the loss.
Hayford netted a season-high 12 points, two assists and two steals while Gabby Hutcherson finished off her game with seven points, four rebounds, three steals and two blocks in the loss. Maliyah Johnson finished with five points and a team-high nine rebounds while Amber Brown finished with five points and three steals.

FIRST QUARTER
- The Blue Devils jumped out to the early 7-2 lead but Maliyah Johnson drained a corner triple and Gabby Hutcherson netted a floater in the lane to tie the game, 7-7, three minutes in.
- Duke responded with back-to-back triples as they took the 13-7 lead into the first quarter media timeout.
- Liatu King ended the quarter with an elbow jumper to send the Panthers to the second quarter trailing 15-9.
- Pitt notched three blocks on defense in the opening quarter while four different Panthers scored.
- Avery Strickland opened up the second quarter with a corner triple to cut the Pitt deficit to five, 17-12, but the Blue Devils came right back with six straight to push their lead to 23-12 just over three minutes into the quarter.
- Hutcherson responded with a fadeaway jumper and Emy Hayford netted a corner triple to make it 23-17 in favor of Duke late in the quarter.
- Dayshanette Harris finished the scoring in the half for Pitt as she netted a step-back jumper and was fouled and made the free throw to send the game to halftime with Pitt trailing by five, 25-20.
- Seven different Panthers scored in the first half led by Hutcherson who had four points, two rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
- The Blue Devils opened the third quarter on a 7-1 run to push their lead out to 32-21 just over two minutes into the quarter.
- The Panthers came right back with a 6-0 run of their own as Brown and Hayford netted layups while Marley Washenitz drained a pull-up jumper on a fast break to make it 32-27 in favor of Duke with 4:12 to play in the third.
- Hayford came out of the media timeout and finished off a layup before Channise Lewis drained a deep triple to send Pitt to the fourth trailing the Blue Devils 36-32.
- The Blue Devils pushed their lead out to 10, 44-34, midway through the final quarter as Celeste Taylor netted her first triple of the game.
- After the media timeout, Hutcherson and Hayford netted back-to-back triples but the Panthers weren't able to get any closer as they fell on the road 53-44.
- Pitt finished the game shooting 30.9% while the Blue Devils shot 37.7% in the win.
- Duke outrebounded the Panthers 45-28 in the game while also holding the 26-16 edge in paint scoring.
- Pitt returns home Sunday as they welcome the Virginia Cavaliers to the Petersen Events Center for an ACC battle at 2:00 pm. Sunday's game will air live on ACC Network.
- Sunday's game will also be Pitt's 16th Annual Pink The Pete Game as the Panthers will wear pink uniforms to raise awareness for breast cancer.
