PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team concludes its 2022-23 home schedule on Saturday at noon with its regular-season finale against Duke, knowing that a dual victory will clinch a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference dual meet championship this season.
The 16th-ranked Panthers (9-4, 3-1 ACC) are currently tied atop the conference standings with NC State and Virginia Tech. With tiebreakers not in play for regular-season titles in the ACC, Pitt would secure its first wrestling conference title since 2013-14 by beating the Blue Devils (3-11, 0-4 ACC) on Saturday.
Prior to the match, Pitt will also honor its five departing seniors – Nino Bonaccorsi, Dazjon Casto, Nicholas Meglino, Micky Phillippi and Jake Slinger.
Should the Panthers take care of business, fans can also stick around to watch the team celebrate with the ACC trophy after the final bout.
Pitt will be favored at all but one weight against Duke, whose top wrestler is No. 18 Jonah Niesenbaum, a heavyweight veteran with a record of 23-3 this season and undefeated in the ACC.
The Panthers' list of probables includes all 10 wrestlers expected to compete at the 2023 ACC Championships on Sunday, March 5 in Raleigh, N.C.
Pitt's seven ranked individuals – No. 1 Nino Bonaccorsi at 197 pounds, No. 3 Cole Matthews at 141, No. 10 Micky Phillippi at 133, No. 17 Reece Heller at 184, No. 22 Holden Heller at 165, No. 29 Tyler Badgett at 149 and No. 33 Luca Augustine at 174 – are all expected to start, along with 125-pound Colton Camacho, 157-pound Dazjon Casto and heavyweight Jake Slinger.
The first 100 fans in attendance on Saturday at Fitzgerald Field House will receive a Pitt tumbler shaker bottle. Autographs with Pitt's wrestling student-athletes will also be available for fans after the dual.
