
Panthers Remain Atop ACC Standings With Win Over Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Jamraius Burton continued his All-America-caliber play and Nike Sibande came off teh bench for a big second half to help guide Pitt to an 83-75 win at Florida State Saturday afternoon. The Panthers improved to 18-7 overall and 11-3 in the conference play to remain atop the ACC standings
Burton finished with 19 points, five rebounds and six assists, while Blake Hinson returned to his home state to post a 19-point, 6-rebound effort. Sibande closed with 12 points (all in the second half), four rebounds and two steals with backcourt mate Greg Elliott knocking down four threes as part of his 13-point outing.
Federiko Federiko continued to anchor the Panthers defense with three blocks to go along with eight points and 13 rebounds.
Pitt jumped out to a 37-34 halftime lead behind an efficient scoring effort from Hinson and a solid defensive effort. The Deltona, Fla., native recorded 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 from the foul line, while the Panthers limited Florida State to 36.7 percent (11-of-30) shooting from the floor. Jalen Warley carried the Seminoles with 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting, while leading scorers Darrin Green, Jr., and Matthew Cleveland were held to a combined 2-of-11 from the field.
The Panthers struggled to maintain separation from Florida State in the second half but had an answer each time the Seminoles made a push. Guillermo Diaz Graham scored back-to-back buckets to break a tie game and then a one-point deficit with just under 14 minutes remaining in the contest. Florida State grabbed a 50-49 lead at the 13:12 mark before Burton scored on a pair of mid-range jumpers and Diaz-Graham soared through traffic for a two-hand tap-in to spot the Panthers to a 55-50 advantage with 10:56 remaining.
Florida State got to within two point with under eight minutes left but Sibande countered with consecutive threes from the top of the key to hold off the charging Seminoles. He added tough driving layups at the 4:58 and 4:17 marks to restore five-point leads for the Panthers. Following a pair of defensive stops Burton found Hinson for a dagger three to put Pitt up 74-65 with 2:34 remaining.
Pitt closed out the final minutes of the game with a 7-of-8 effort from the line to cap off its seven road win of the season. Pitt entered the day tied for second among power conference team in road wins.
Warley scored a career-high 23 points to lead the Seminoles, but the Panthers held Green, Jr, and Cleveland to 15 points on a combined 5-of-20 shooting from the field.
BURTON LEADING ACC PLAYER OF THE YEAR RACE
Burton continued to boost his candidacy for ACC Player of the Year with another outstanding all-around game. He recorded his 20th double-figure scoring effort in 23 games and posted his sixth game with 10+ points, 5+ rebounds, and 5+ assists. Burton is one of three players in the NCAA averaging at least 16.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game, while shooting over 50 percent from the field.
SIBANDE A SPARK AS SIXTH MAN
Pitt improved to 11-1 on the season when Sibande has scored in double figures. He has been Pitt's first sub in all 24 games he hasn't started this season.

With the victory, Pitt matches its most conference wins in the ACC since joining the conference for the 2013-14 season.

Pitt's win coupled with Clemson's loss at North Carolina puts the Panthers as the top seed in the ACC. Pitt owns the tiebreaker over Virginia after beating the Cavaliers earlier this season. Virginia will look to defeat Duke in Charlottesville Saturday evening to remain tied with the Panthers at 11-3.

Federiko grabbed seven offense rebounds as Pitt converted 15 boards on the offensive end to 20 second chance points. Guillermo Diaz Graham grabbed three of his five rebounds on the offensive end as Pitt's centers combined for 10 offensive boards.

Pitt knocked down 10 three-point field goals to improve to 10-2 on the season when making 10 or more threes in a game. Pitt leads the ACC in threes per game after finishing 14th in that statistical category last season. The Panthers' 235 made threes already ranks at fourth most in program history.
