MINNEAPOLIS – The Pitt men's and women's swimming programs wrapped up the Minnesota Invite Sunday morning after competing in the Time Trials at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. The Panthers posted 17 Top 50 times in the nation and broke three school records during the five-day meet.
Pitt had 21 swimmers compete in the LCM Time Trials, highlighted by Max Matteazzi posting a 2:00.55 in the 200 IM. While the meet wasn't officially sanctioned by World Aquatics, the worldwide governing body of swimming, his time would rank him in the Top 100 in the world of 2023. Krzysztof Radziszewski finished first with a personal best time in the 100 Back(56.75) and Jensen Nelson (56.76) also finished second in the event.
The Panthers wrapped up the calendar year by breaking three school records and recording 17 Top 50 times. Yendell broke her own school record in the 100 Fly with a time of 52.08 SCY, ranking tied for 19th in the nation, and swam a 22.03 SCY in the 50 Free, ranking 15th in the nation. Claire Jansen also put her name on a school record in the 100 Back with a time of 52.15 SCY, ranking 23rd in the nation.
Yendell and Jasen where each a member of the 400 Medley Relay team that broke the school record with a time of 3:36.10 SCY, ranking 28th in the nation. The Panthers three other relays also posted times in the Top 40 (SCY) in the nation: 200 Medley Relay, 16th (1:36.92); 200 Free Relay, 26th (1:30.06), and the 800 Free Relay, 35th (7:15.78).
Matteazzi owns three times ranked in the Top 45 in the 200 IM (1:44.47 – 37th), 400 IM (3:46.99 – 38th), and the 200 Breast (1:55.89 – 45th). Marcin Goraj ranks 34th in the 200 Free (1:34.13) while Radziszewski ranks 37th (46.23) in the 100 Back SCY and Michal Piela ranks 43rd in the 400 IM (3:47.41). All recorded times are below the invited times to last year's NCAA Championships.
All four of the men's relays rank in the Top 40: 800 Free Relay (6:24.43 – 19th), 200 Medley Relay (1:25.07 – 23rd), 400 Free Relay (2:53.23 – 24th), and the 200 Free Relay (1:18.84 – 37th). The relays showed great depth as the 200 "B" Medley Relay swam a time of 1:26.03, the same time as the "A" relay swam last season. The 400 "B" Medley Relay also finished just a second behind the Panthers' "A" relay with a time of 3:10.88.
The Panthers also recorded three Top 50 times earlier this season in a double dual meet against Penn State and Notre Dame: women's 400 Free Relay (3:18.23 – 36th), men's 400 Medley Relay (3:08.38 – 25th), and Marcin Goraj in the 200 Back (1:40.76 – 23rd).
