THE OPENING TIP
- Pitt hosts Binghamton Friday, Nov. 10 at the Petersen Events Center. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. with Kevin Wheeler and Julius Page calling the action on ACC Network Extra.
- The Panthers topped the 100-point mark in Monday's season opening win over NC A&T, marking the first time Pitt has begun a season with a 100+ point effort since the 2007-08 season. Pitt has now scored 100 or more points in a season opener seven times in program history.
- Carlton Carrington finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists in the season opening win over NC A&T to become the first Division I player to record a triple-double in his debut since Notre Dame's Chris Thomas accomplished that feat against New Hampshire Nov. 16, 2001.
- Pitt has compiled a 291-86 (.772) record, including a 169-17 (.909) ledger in non-conference play, in 21 seasons at the Petersen Events Center.
- Pitt returns its starting frontcourt from a year ago in Blake Hinson (15.3 ppg., 6.0 rpg., 97 3FG) and Federiko Federiko (6.6 ppg., 5.3 rpg., 1.7 bpg.). The tandem combined for 26 points and 18 rebounds in the season opener.
- Guards Ishmael Leggett, Carlton Carrington, and Jaland Lowe will look to replace a four-guard rotation that combined to average 45.1 points, 15.5 rebounds, and 11.4 assists per game a year ago. The trio combined for 33 points, 18 rebounds, and 15 assists in the Panthers season opening win over NC A&T.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Blake Hinson led the Panthers in scoring (15.3 ppg.), rebounds (6.0 rpg.), and three-pointers (97), while posting 30 double-figure scoring games and nine 20+ point games a year ago. He is one of just 24 players (25 times) in the NCAA since the 1992-93 season to average 15.0 or more points and 6.0 or more rebounds per game with 95 or more made threes.
- Federiko Federiko returns for his junior season after shooting a team-high 66.7 percent (94-of-141) from the field, while also leading the Panthers in offensive rebounds (86), blocks (58), and dunks (39) a year ago. He recorded his second career double-double (13 points / 10 rebounds), while adding four offensive rebounds, three dunks and four blocks in the opener.
- Zack Austin has made 60 or more threes and blocked 60 or more shots in each of the past two seasons. He and Duke's Shane Battier (2000, 2001) are the only two players to accomplish that feat in multiple seasons. Austin had eight points, four rebounds, two assists, and a blocked shot in his Pitt debut.
- Ishmael Leggett has started 70 consecutive games with 44 double figure scoring efforts in that stretch. He has scored 10 or more points in 29 of his past 32 games. Leggett posted career bests in scoring (16.4 ppg.), rebounds (5.8 rpg.), assists (73), steals (42), and three-point field goals (49) last season at Rhode Island.
- Jorge Diaz Graham went a career-best 3-of-3 from three-point range in the win over NC A&T and is now 15-of-37 (.405) from beyond the arc in his career.
- William Jeffress had seven points, four rebounds, three steals, and a blocked shot in 17 minutes of action in the opener after missing the entire 2022-23 season with a foot injury.
- Blake Hinson was named Preseason Second Team All-ACC and the Panthers were picked ninth overall in the projected standings as voted upon by league's media panel.
- The Panthers have four players 6-10 or taller on the roster for just the second time in program history. Pitt's starting lineup features four players 6-5 or taller and has an average height of just under 6-7. Pitt ranks second in the NCAA in average roster height (78.9 in.) according to KenPom.
- Pitt made 12 three-point field goals in the season opener after setting a school record with 325 three-pointers last season. The Panthers are 13-3 over the past two seasons when making 10 or more threes in a game.
- The Panthers scored 46 points in the paint in the season opener, the most by a Pitt team since scoring 50 points in the paint against Central Arkansas Nov. 15, 2018.
- Pitt's 100-point effort in the season opener marked the first 100+ point scoring game for the Panthers since a 112-106 win over Marshall on Dec. 28, 2016. Pitt is now 44-0 all-time when reaching the 100-point plateau, including a 6-0 mark at the Petersen Events Center.
- Following Friday's contest with Binghamton, Pitt will face three consecutive opponents from the state of Florida. The last time the Panthers faced three or more Florida teams was during the 1948-49 season when they played consecutive doubleheaders against Miami and Florida.
PANTHER SPOTLIGHTS
- Carlton Carrington posted just the 10th triple-double by an ACC freshman in league history. He and Dennis Scott (Georgia Tech) are the only freshmen to record a triple-double in their first career game.
