King And Washenitz Tabbed 2023-24 Women’s Basketball Team Captains

PITTSBURGH – Senior Liatu King and sophomore Marley Washenitz will serve as team captains for the Pitt women's basketball team for the 2023-24 campaign, as announced by head coach Tory Verdi on Thursday. Both players were selected as team captain for the first time in their career.
King, a two-year starter at forward, returns to Pitt following her best collegiate season last year where she averaged a career-high 9.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.4 blocks across an average of 23.7 minutes per game. The Washington, DC native ranked fourth in the ACC in blocks (1.4 bpg), fifth in rebounding (7.6 rpg) and 11th in field goal percentage (39.4%) during her junior campaign. She also led the Panthers with six double-doubles on the year including a career-best performance in the win over North Alabama as she netted 26 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks.
Washenitz, a sophomore point guard, made an immediate impact on the Panthers during her freshman campaign in 2022-23. The talented floor general appeared in 28 games while making 16 starts in her first season. She capped the season averaging 3.3 points, 1.5 assists and 1.3 rebounds to go along with 25 steals while providing the Panthers' with a spark each and every time she touched the floor.
King and Washenitz will lead a team that is made up of four returners from a season ago and eight newcomers (five transfers, three freshmen).
The Panthers open up their 2023-24 regular season at home on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 7:00 pm as they welcome the Yale Bulldogs to the Petersen Events Center.
