PITTSBURGH – Facility records, podium performances and #Pinzburgh living up to the name headline the Pitt Athletics PNC Achievers of the Week after a banner weekend of competition from Panthers across the country.
Junior Marcin Goraj totaled four top-three overall finishes in a double-dual meet with No. 17 Michigan and No. 24 Wisconsin on Saturday. The Krakow, Poland native took first overall in the 200-yard backstroke (1:44.77), second overall in the 100-yard butterfly (48.36) and third overall in the 200-yard freestyle (1:37.44). Goraj also was a member of the 200-yard medley relay team that finished second with a time of 1:27.36. The Pitt men's swimming and diving team took Wisconsin down to the final relay of the meet and came up just .37 of a second short of getting a win over a top 25 opponent.
Senior Lydia Bottelier posted a facility record with a first-place finish in the pentathlon, collecting 3980 points this past weekend at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational in Louisville, Ky. The Erwinna, PA native recorded career-bests in the 60-meter hurdles (8.96) and the 800m (2:22.43) while winning the high jump (1.74m) to record the best pentathlon result in the history of the facility. Bottelier holds the third-best finish in the event in program history.
Pitt's Reece Heller helped clinch a stunning dual victory for the No. 24 Panthers on Friday night at No. 7 Virginia Tech, pinning No. 7 Hunter Bolen in the second period of their key bout at 184 pounds. With Pitt holding a narrow lead over the Hokies heading into the match, Heller's incredible defensive fall over Bolen extended the lead to 20-12 and silenced the crowd at Cassell Coliseum. Pitt would go on to win 26-12, claiming first place in the ACC dual standings, with the Panthers' first dual victory in Blacksburg since 2004. Heller improved to 15-3 on the season, with six wins over ranked opponents.
