PITTSBURGH—The Pitt wrestling team is back in Virginia for the second straight week – this time for a Friday night dual matchup with Virginia Tech that will air on the ACC Network at 7 p.m.
The Panthers (7-2, 1-0 ACC) and Hokies (7-2, 1-0 ACC) bring the same record into the nationally televised top-25 dual as Pitt and Virginia Tech will battle for first place in the ACC.
Pitt moved back into the NWCA Coaches Poll this week at No. 24 following last Friday's fantastic performance at Virginia, a 25-6 dual win that included eight match victories.
Also last week, No. 7 Virginia Tech hosted NC State and handed the Wolfpack their first loss of the season, 16-14, in a dramatic dual and will now welcome the Panthers to Cassell Coliseum.
Beloved ACC wrestling announcer duo Shawn Kenney and Rock Harrison will be on the call for Friday's Pitt-Virginia Tech dual featuring two of only eight teams in all of college wrestling with at least four individuals ranked in the top eight of their respective weight classes by InterMat this week.
Leading the Panthers, No. 2 Nino Bonaccorsi at 197 pounds, No. 3 Cole Matthews at 141 pounds and No. 5 Dayton Pitzer at heavyweight will likely need to win for Pitt to leave Blacksburg with a victory.
No. 7 Micky Phillippi at 133 pounds is likely to face No. 5 Sam Latona from Virginia Tech in a crucial bout and the only head-to-head matchup of top-10 individuals; however, eight of the 10 probables matches have the potential to be ranked-versus-ranked contests on Friday night at Cassell Coliseum.
Pitt leads the all-time series with Virginia Tech, 12-7, but the Panthers have struggled in Blacksburg and last won at VT in 2004 – when current head coach Keith Gavin was a freshman on the Pitt squad.
