PITTSBURGH—The Pitt wrestling team arrived in Virginia on Thursday afternoon ahead of its opening ACC dual of the season set for 7 p.m. on Friday night at the Cavaliers' Memorial Gym.
The Panthers (6-2) and Cavaliers (6-2) have traded home wins each of the last three seasons – a streak that Pitt will look to break as Keith Gavin's squad aims to begin its 2023 conference calendar with a dual win away from home ahead of more conference matchups in the coming weeks.
Pitt blasted Buffalo, 37-0, one week ago; meanwhile, Virginia beat Ohio, Navy and Kent State at home last weekend but also dropped a dual to ranked rival Maryland.
Pitt's projected lineup features seven individuals ranked by InterMat this week, with four in the top 10: No. 2 Nino Bonaccorsi at 197 pounds, No. 3 Cole Matthews at 141, No. 5 Dayton Pitzer at heavyweight and No. 7 Micky Phillippi, who started his career at Virginia, at 133.
The Cavaliers, led by 17th-year head coach Steve Garland, have six ranked individuals throughout their lineup for Friday's dual, with No. 15 Justin McCoy at 165 pounds leading the way.
Tyler Badgett, No. 29 at 149, Holden Heller, No. 31 at 165, and Reece Heller, No. 17 at 184, are also ranked for Gavin, who spent time as an assistant coach under Garland early in his coaching career.
Pitt leads the all-time series against Virginia in wrestling by an 8-2 margin, with a 7-2 mark since joining the ACC during the 2013-14 campaign. Both of Pitt's defeats were in Charlottesville, however.
ACC Network Extra will stream coverage of the Pitt-Virginia dual on ESPN3.com and via the ESPN app.
