
Panthers Host Backyard Brawl with West Virginia for Senior Meet

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt swimming & diving team hosts West Virginia in the Backyard Brawl at Trees Pool, Friday-Saturday, Jan. 13-14 for its first meet of the new year. The Panthers will also honor its 2023 senior class prior to the start of Saturday's swimming events.
The men's swimming and diving program enters its 60th meeting with West Virginia, leading the all-time series with a 42-16 record. The weekend meet marks the 49th all-time meeting for the women's program and the Mountaineers, as the Panthers lead the series with a 42-6 overall record.

The Panthers begin their 2023 campaign after coming off strong performances at the Minnesota Invite in early December. Senior Cooper Van der Laan and Sophie Yendell each earned ACC Swimmer of the Week honors for their individual performances.
Yendell earned her first-career weekly conference honor after dominating the pool against some of the nation's top talent in Minnesota. Over the course of the four-day meet, the junior broke two school records in the 50-yard free (22.34) and the 100-yard fly (53.43), that she set just a year ago. Yendell broke the 50-yard free record during the prelims and matched her record in the finals, finishing third overall. She qualified for an NCAA B Cut in the 100-yard fly and finished the final day of the meet with a 19th-place finish in the 100-yard free.
Van der Laan led the men's team at the Minnesota Invite, taking third in the 100-yard breast (52.14) and fourth overall in the 200-yard breast (1:55.25). The two-time NCAA qualifier in both events earned an NCAA B Cut in both the 100-yard breast and 200-yard breast.
On the diving side, senior diver Dylan Reed finished sixth in the 1-meter with a score of 621.40 during the final day of the 2022 USA Diving Winter Nationals, Dec. 18
Pitt had three divers compete at the week-long event: Reed, Ethan Radio and Jackson Salisbury. Reed finished eighth overall in the synchronized men's 3-meter with a score of 514.56, competing alongside Kentucky's Samuel Duncan. Reed also finished 21st overall in preliminaries of the individual men's 3-meter with a score of 305.05.
Radio and Salisbury also competed in the synchronized men's 3-meter, finishing 10th overall with a score of 439.20.
