PITTSBURGH - The Pitt baseball team opened its 2022 fall practice season with a 23-4 win over the Ontario Blue Jays in an exhibition game at Charles Cost Field.
"Today was a great day to start our fall practice segment in many ways," head coach Mike Bell said. "The opportunity to compete against a great organization in the Ontario Blue Jays as well as continuing to develop our young Pitt Panthers was invaluable. We were really excited to get a lot of fresh new faces out on the field for the first time. This fall will continue to provide a lot of opportunity for the growth and development of our team and our program."
Junior right-handed starting pitcher Logan Evans set the tone for the victory by striking out the side in the top of the first inning.
The Panthers proceeded to pound out 15 hits, with home runs by Noah Martinez, Jack Anderson and Drew Ripepi highlighting the afternoon. Anderson also collected two doubles while Tommy Tavarez picked up three RBI on a bases-clearing double.
Dylan Simmons gave Pitt two strong frames of relief, striking out five of the six batters he faced. The Panthers limited the Blue Jays to three hits.
Pitt's next game action during the fall season will come on Friday, Oct. 14, when the Panthers visit Ohio State. Pitt wraps up fall practice with the annual three-game Royal & Gold Series Oct. 26-28. The Panthers are also scheduled to host their MLB Scout Day on Friday, Oct. 21.
