PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh softball head coach Jodi Hermanek announced the hiring of assistant coach Matt Stewart to her staff, Monday afternoon.
"I am very excited to add Coach Stewart to our coaching staff and to the panther family," said Hermanek. "Coach Stewart comes from a lineage of conference and national championship success, and we look forward to his experiences pouring into our program."
Stewart joins the Pittsburgh staff after spending three seasons as the assistant softball coach with Campbell University. Stewart helped guide the Camels to back-to-back Big South Conference regular season titles and tournament championships in 2021 and 2022. The 2021 NCAA postseason appearance marked the program's first postseason appearance and win since 2009.
"His energy, discipline, and attention to details mirror our core values, and as a leader in our program, our athletes will benefit from his leadership."
The Orlando, Florida native served primarily as the hitting coach and outfield coach while helping Campbell post a 36-9 record over the last two seasons and advancing to the 2021 NCAA Stillwater and 2022 NCAA Knoxville regionals.
"I cannot put into words how excited I am to be joining the Pitt family," said Stewart. "It has been a dream of mine to coach in the Power 5 and I am very blessed to be a part of this program and university. The amazing staff and the bright future of Pitt Athletics are what made this position a perfect fit for me. I want to thank Coach Hermanek for giving me this opportunity and I can't wait to get started with this group of talented athletes."
Prior to Campbell, Stewart endured coaching stints with the University of South Carolina and the University of Florida.
Stewart helped the Gamecocks earn the No. 9 NCAA National Seed and their first Super Regional appearance in 11 years. Under head coach Beverly Smith, he was part of a coaching staff that was named the 2018 Southeast Region Coaching Staff of the Year by the NFCA.
While working with the development of hitters and outfielders, Stewart helped coach a defense that posted a .984 fielding percentage in conference play to lead the SEC. He also assisted in developing USC hitters who posted a program record and SEC best 66 home runs.
Stewart received both his bachelor's and master's degree in Sports Management from the University of Florida. During his time in Gainesville, Stewart assisted the softball team for two National Championships (2014, 2015) and two SEC Championship titles (2015, 2016).
