PITTSBURGH – Pitt junior pitcher Billy Corcoran has signed as an undrafted free agent with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Corcoran, a Third Team All-ACC and All-ACC Academic Team selection in 2022, was one of the top pitchers in the ACC a year ago.
A Malvern, Pa., native, Corcoran posted his best season as a Panther finishing with a 7-5 record with a 4.43 ERA. He ranked among the ACC leaders in fewest walks allowed (1st - 8), innings pitched (8th - 85.1) and wins (T-8th - 7). He was also tied for third in NCAA in walks allowed per nine innings (0.84) and fifth in strikeout-to-walk ratio (8.62). Corcoran was named the ACC Pitcher of the Week on April 25, earning the honors with a win at No. 4 Miami on April 24 in which he had eight strikeouts, one walk and one run in seven innings.
He finished his Pitt career with an 11-13 record and 4.24 ERA with 160 strikeouts in 189 innings.
Corcoran was selected in the 36th Round by the Texas Rangers in the 2018 MLB First Year Player Draft. In 2020, Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association reached a deal to shorten the 2020 draft to five rounds, while the 2021 and 2022 drafts were reduced to 20 rounds.
The Panthers posted 29 victories and reached the semifinals of the ACC Tournament for the first time since 2018 by upsetting 7-seed Georgia Tech (12-6) and 2-seed Louisville (6-5) last season. The 29 wins were the most in a single season since 2018 (29) and tied for the most in a season since joining the ACC in 2014.
Pitt finished the regular season with five wins and two series victories against Top-5 ranked teams. The Panthers ended the regular season with an RPI ranking of 69, 37th toughest strength of schedule, 12 wins against quadrant one teams and 10 wins against the NCAA Tournament field.
