Gilbertson Named to ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Team

PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh senior pitcher Matt Gilbertson was named to the 2022 ABCA/Rawlings East All-Region Second Team as announced by the organization Wednesday afternoon. The eight all-region teams are voted on by members of the American Baseball Coaches Association and the process is led by the ABCA NCAA Div. I All-America Committee.
Gilbertson is coming off an outstanding season as the Panthers No. 1 starter. He posted a team-best 9-3 record, including four wins over nationally ranked opponents (No. 5 Virginia, No. 5 Louisville, No. 7 Georgia Tech and No. 20 Clemson), while also leading the team in ERA (3.74), WHIP (1.17), starts (15), innings pitched (96.1) and strikeouts (88). The Henderson, Nevada, native ranks among the national leaders in walks allowed per nine innings (8th - 1.03) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (12th – 7.91). He also ranked among the ACC leaders in wins (T-3rd – 9), innings pitched (4th – 96.1), innings per game (1st – 6.42), games started (T-8th – 15), strikeouts (T-8th – 88), strikeouts looking (2nd – 37), walks allowed (T-2nd – 11), shutouts (T-1st – 1) and complete games (T-1st – 1).
For his career, the 6-0 right-hander is tied for eighth in wins (17), 13th in strikeouts (180) and 14th in games started (32) and innings pitched (205.1). His production this season ranked tied for fifth in wins (9), 10th in strikeouts (88), tied for third in starts (15) and seventh in innings pitched (96.1) in the single-season record books.
In his 11 starts against ACC competition, Gilbertson posted a 7-4 record with 57 strikeouts to just seven walks in 79.2 innings pitched.
Gilbertson, also a Second Team All-ACC selection in 2022, is the fourth Pitt player to earn all-region honors under fourth-year head coach Mike Bell. The Panthers reached the semifinals of the 2022 ACC Tournament and finished the season with 29 wins, including 10 victories over nationally-ranked ACC opponents.
ABCA/Rawlings All-Region First Team selections are nominated for ABCA/Rawlings All-America honors. The ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. I All-America Teams will be announced the morning of Friday, June 17 prior to the start of the 2022 NCAA Div. I College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
The finalists for the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. I Gold Glove Team will be announced via the Rawlings Sporting Goods Twitter on Monday, June 20, and the Gold Glove winners in all divisions will be announced on Wednesday, June 22. In all divisions, ABCA/Rawlings National Pitchers and Position Players of the Year will be announced on Monday, June 27.
The Chair of the ABCA NCAA Div. I All-America & Coach of the Year Committee is Tommy Raffo of Arkansas State University.
