Panthers to Visit Five European Cities
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team departed the United States Saturday evening to begin an 11-day tour of Spain and Italy.
From May 7-18, the Panthers will visit five European cities. In Spain Pitt will make stops in Tarragona and Barcelona, followed by Italian destinations of Rome, Florence and Milan.
The Panthers will play a minimum of four matches against professional, international competition over the 11-day tour. Notably, Pitt will face some of the world's top competition during its stay in Italy.
Daily content from the trip, including limited match coverage, will be shared to the team's European Tour Central as well as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
Head coach Dan Fisher is no stranger to Spain, having spent three professional seasons living in the country playing in Tarragona, Madrid and Tenerife between the years of 2000-03.
Following the Panthers' arrival in Barcelona, the team's itinerary includes visits to La Sagrada Familia, Parc Güell and Montjuic.
Next, Pitt's three-night stay in Rome will feature a tour of the Sistine Chapel within the Vatican City in addition to sights such as the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain.
The Panthers will travel north to Florence for a two-night stay that includes sightseeing of Ponte Vecchio and the Duomo.
For the final, two-night leg of the tour, Pitt will visit Milan, where they will take in the Sforza Castle, Duomo, Galleria and Scala.
SPRING 2022 ROSTER
The Panthers will return three starters to the fold in 2022, including AVCA All-American middle blockers Serena Gray and Chiamaka Nwokolo, as well as seasoned libero Ashley Browske. Pitt is in good hands with rising senior setter Lexis Akeo, in addition to rising sophomore setter Rachel Fairbanks, who made a splash during her first NCAA Tournament run in December.
Rounding out the spring returners are outside hitters Valeria Vazquez Gomez and Cat Flood, middle blocker Sabrina Starks, right side Eliana Posada and libero/defensive specialist Emmy Klika.
Newcomers include transfers Julianna Dalton (outside hitter, Washington State) and Courtney Buzzerio (right side, Iowa) as well as two freshmen: libero/defensive specialist Dillyn Griffin and middle blocker Rachel Jepsen.
