PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's basketball roster rebuild is nearing completion as head coach Lance White announced the signing of Marley Washenitz to a National Letter of Intent (NLI) on Friday afternoon. Washenitz is the fifth new member of the Panthers signing class for the upcoming 2022-23 campaign.
"I am so excited to add Marley to our team," stated head coach Lance White. "Marley's knowledge of the game and her ability to make everyone around her better will add to what we're building for the 2022-2023 team. She has a winner's mentality and a work ethic to match. I am anxious to get going and put her in the mix with our team."
Washenitz comes to Pittsburgh from nearby Fairmont, West Virginia where she twice earned State Player of the Year honors for Fairmont Senior high school. The smooth guard finished off her successful four-year career surpassing the 2,000 career point plateau while earning First Team All-State honors three times and Third Team All-State honors once. The ultimate competitor, Washenitz helped lead the Polar Bears to the Class AAA state title during her freshman season while earning state runner-up finishes as a junior and senior while posting a career record of 92-12 at Fairmont Senior.
The 5-10 guard shined during her senior campaign at Fairmont Senior as she averaged a career-high 28.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 6.0 steals, 3.0 assists and 2.0 blocks while leading her squad to a 25-2 overall record and a 14-1 league mark. Washenitz also helped the Polar Bears reach the state title game for the third time in four seasons while earning All-Tournament Team honors while posting a team-high 25.0 points per game. She was also named First Team All-State while being awarded the Mary Ostrowski Award, given to the top high school girls basketball player in the state of West Virginia, for the second straight season.
Following her successful junior campaign, Washenitz was named Gatorade West Virginia Girls Basketball Player of the Year as she averaged 20.1 points, 10.0 assists, 9.0 rebounds and 7.0 steals while leading her squad to an 18-1 record and the Class AAA state title game. She also earned First Team All-State honors for the second straight year.
She finished off her high school career scoring over 2,000 points while adding over 750 rebounds, 500 steals and 475 assists across 104 career games.
Washenitz joins Channise Lewis, Gabby Hutcherson, Avery Strickland and Aislin Malcolm as part of the Panthers' highly anticipated 2022 signing class. These five join a talented roster that returns seven of their eight leading scorers from a season ago.
