
Pitt Falls Twice to No. 11/13 Duke Friday

DURHAM, N.C. – The Pitt softball team fell, 3-2, in game one and 6-1 in game two to No. 11/13 Duke Friday afternoon at Duke Softball Stadium.
NEWS & NOTES
Game One
Duke scored the game's first runs in the bottom of the first as a double to center brought in two. Muraskin settled in after the first, retiring nine straight in the second, third and fourth innings.
Pitt tied the game up in the top of the fifth as senior Sarah Seamans hit an opposite field double to right, scoring both Whaley and junior EC Taylor. The double was Seamans' sixth of the season.
The Blue Devils got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the fifth with a solo homer to center off the bat of Caroline Jacobson to lead, 3-2.
The Panthers had their chance in the top of the seventh to tie the ballgame up as senior Katlyn Pavlick walked and Seamans singled and advanced on an error, putting runners on second and third with one out. Pitt couldn't advance the runner home as two strikeouts ended game one of the double-header.
Game Two
Pitt (14-27, 2-20 ACC) took an early lead as Pavlick singled to center, scoring Whaley for a 1-0 lead. Duke (40-7, 19-3 ACC) responded with a run of its own with a double to left field as the game was tied 1-1 after one inning.
The game had an hour and 15-minute weather delay due to rain and lightning after the double in the bottom of the first.
The Blue Devils scored two runs in the bottom of the third, doing so 45 minutes apart as after an RBI single up the middle, the game was paused due to lighting in the area. After the delay, Duke scored another run via a sacrifice fly to right to lead 3-1 after three innings.
Duke scored three in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-1 advantage. The Panthers could not start a rally and fell, 6-1.
Vartabedian Field plays host to the ACC Softball Championship May 11-14 with championship Saturday at 1 PM on ESPN2.
NEWS & NOTES
- Graduate student Ally Muraskin went the distance in her last career start in game one, allowing three earned, three hits and striking out two.
- Game two had two separate delays totaling two hours due to rain and lighting in the nearby Raleigh/Durham area. The game in total took four hours and 37 minutes.
- Senior Yvonne Whaley finished 3-for-6 with two runs in total today. She finishes the season with a .344 batting average, becoming the first Panther since Giorgiana Zeremenko to hit .340 or above since 2018.
