
Panthers Face No. 1 North Carolina in ACC Tournament Quarterfinals

PITTSBURGH – Pitt returns to Arlotta Stadium in South Bend, Ind., for an ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship Quarterfinal matchup with the No. 1 ranked North Carolina Friday, April 29 at 12 p.m. in the first of four quarterfinal games on the campus of Notre Dame. Friday's afternoon contest will once again be live on the ACC Network.
In its first postseason game in program history Wednesday, Pitt defeated Louisville, 13-10, for its second win over the Cardinals in 2022. The Panthers improved to 9-9 with the win and secured their first victory away from Highmark Stadium.
Second Team All-ACC selection Paulina DiFatta set an ACC Championship record with 19 saves to anchor the Pitt defense, while the offensive trio of Madisyn Kittell (3G, 2A), Paige Petty (2G, 2A) and Carlie Leach (2G, 1A) combined for seven goals and five assists on the day. Freshman Ava Washington also netted a pair of goals in the contest.
North Carolina sits at 15-0 overall and 8-0 in the ACC and remains the top-ranked team nationally. Most recently, the Tar Heels defeated Duke 18-4 on April 21.
The Tar Heels placed four on the All-ACC First Team, two on the second team, and one on the All-Freshman Team. They are led by Tewaaraton Award finalist Jamie Ortega who has 83 points (53G and 30A). Ortega is only 10 points away from becoming the ACC's all-time points leader. Fellow first team member Taylor Moreno has stopped 108 shots and leads the ACC with a .484 save percentage. North Carolina is in search of their sixth straight ACC Tournament title.
The two teams met back on February 24 for the Panthers' first ACC game. North Carolina came out on top, 15-5. Leach recorded a hat trick and DiFatta made 14 saves for the Panthers. Ortega had five points on three goals and two assists to pace the Tar Heels.
The winner of Friday's quarterfinal will face the winner of No. 4 seed Duke and No. 5 seed Notre Dame on Sunday at 1 p.m.
