PITTSBURGH – Pitt baseball (21-14) fell 3-2 in 11 innings to West Virginia (23-12) Wednesday afternoon at PNC Park. The Panthers will play one more game of "Backyard Ball" at the Pirates' home ballpark this season, Tuesday, May 17 against another rival, Penn State.
The Mountaineers' game-winning runner was put on base on a fielding error, and a throwing error in two at-bats later allowed him to score.
All three of West Virginia's runs came on miscues from the Panthers: a wild pitch in the first inning and throwing error trying to catch a runner stealing third base in the sixth inning.
Pitt initially tied it up in the fifth inning. With two outs, Jeffrey Wehler doubled to right center and was knocked in by Tatem Levins on a single to left field.
The second Panthers' run came in the next inning. With an out, Josh Overbeek drew a walk and scored in the next at-bat on a triple to left field from Dom Popa.
Pitt returns to ACC play at No. 4 Miami with a three-game series beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
