Pitt Wins First Backyard Brawl Matchup 9-6 at Home

PITTSBURGH – Pitt baseball (13-10) took the first matchup of the Backyard Brawl in the 2022 season with a 9-6 victory over rival West Virginia (14-9) Wednesday night at Charles L. Cost Field. The Panthers scored three unanswered runs to secure the victory.
Sky Duff knocked in the game-winning run in the fourth inning, singling through the right side with two outs to bring home Jeffrey Wehler.
The last two runs came in the sixth inning. Leadoff batter Kyle Hess was hit by a pitch. With one out, Tatem Levins hit his team-leading ninth homer to right field.
Pitt jumped out to a 6-0 lead in its first trip to the plate. With one out, Wehler singled up the middle and stole second base. The bases were loaded when Levins was hit by a pitch and Duff walked. All six runs came with two outs. Bryce Hulett brought in Wehler and Levins with a single to centerfield. Jack Anderson knocked in Duff from second base on another single to centerfield. Franks finished it with a three-run homer to right field, his seventh of the year.
West Virginia clawed back in the game, producing two runs in the third inning and four more the next inning to tie it up.
The Panthers remain at home and return to ACC play with a three-game series against No. 5 Louisville beginning Friday at 3 p.m.

- Brady Devereux (2-0) picked up the win in relief, allowing no runs, two hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
- Baron Stuart recorded his second-straight save and third of the season, retiring all four batters faced to end the game with two strikeouts.
- Quin Konuszewski, Dylan Lester, C.J. McKennitt, Stuart and Devereux combined to only allow four batters reach base on two walks and two hits over 5.1 innings of scoreless relief.
- Levins reached base in all five trips to the plate with his homer, two walks and two hit-by-pitches.
- Hulett reached four times, going 2-3 with two RBI and two walks.
- Funk drew a game-high three walks, while Wehler had two in addition to his hit.
