
Petty Nets Five Goals as Pitt Bests Binghamton, 17-11

PITTSBURGH – Graduate transfer Paige Petty scored five goals and added six draw controls to lead 11 different goal scorers as Pitt posted a 17-11 win over Binghamton Sunday afternoon at Highmark Stadium. Kierin Ratliff-Kailbourne (2G, 1 A), Madisyn Kittell (1G, 2 A) and Dylana Williams (1G, 2 A) each had three point days for the Panthers as well.
"I think we worked hard and finished our offensive opportunities," Head Coach Emily Boissoneault said after the game. "You need to learn how to win and for a new program that's very important. We've come close on some tight losses and have been happy with how we've played, but not satisfied with the final result. A win gives us a pat on the back that we are doing the right things."v
Petty sparked the Panthers in the opening quarter with three goals as Pitt jumped out to a 5-3 lead after 15 minutes of play. Binghamton scored the opening goal before Julie Foster tied things up at 1-1 with a free position goal at the 12-minute mark. Carlie Leach forced a turnover and carried into the scoring zone before finding Petty for her first goal of the game less than two-minutes later to give the Panthers a lead they would not relinquish.
Petty scored for a second time off the free position at the 4:37 mark to erase a Binghamton goal a minute prior and Kittell added a goal off a quick reset pass from behind the cage by Ratliff-Kailbourne to spot the Panthers to a 5-2 advantage. Kenna Newman added a free position goal for Binghamton with 1:47 left in the quarter.
Pitt came out in attack mode in the second quarter firing four shots in the opening minutes of play with Ratliff-Kailbourne slotting a shot over the keepers left shoulder off a pass from Kittell with five second remaining on the shot clock to regain a three-goal advantage. Maureen McNierney scored her first goal of the season off a free position attempt at the 10:23 mark for an 8-4 edge.
Binghamton got a goal off the eight-meter mark with 8:30 left in the half, but Pitt responded with two goals in the next two minutes to complete the scoring. Chloe Jones made a 30-yard run and split three defenders inside the eight-meter mark before beating the goalie high side for her eighth goal of the season. Foster followed up with a her second goal of the day off a left to right dodge from the top left eight-meter mark with 6:31 left to spot the Panthers to a 9-4 lead they would carry into the half.
Ratliff-Kailbourne opened scoring in the second half with a goal off a pass from Kate Elam at the 14:19 mark and Elam found the back of the net less than a minute later for an 11-4 lead. Williams fed Emily Coughlin for a goal at the 9:43 mark to give the Panthers an eight-goal advantage. Following a free position goal by Binghamton, Petty received a pass from Williams off a nice face cut from the top of the arc and beat the Bearcat goalie for the fourth time of the day with 6:02 left in the quarter.
Binghamton scored three goals in the final three minutes of the third, including a pair by Olivia Muscolino, to get to within 13-8.
The Panthers scored the first four goals of the final quarter to take a commanding 17-8 lead. Ava Washington started the scoring off a pass from Kittell at the 14:20 mark with Petty (13:36), Williams (10:33) and Sydney Naylor (2:37) adding unassisted goals to finish off the Pitt scoring. Binghamton tacked on three goals over the final 2:09 of play to close out the game 17-11.
Pitt's starting defensive unit of Therese Pitman, Abby Thorne, Payton Reed, Brittney Villhauer and Allyson Trice continue their strong play, combining for five ground balls, five draw controls and five caused turnovers, while holding Binghamton leading scorer Madison Murphy to no goals on just one shot attempt.
Starting goalie Paulina DiFatta allowed eight goals and finished with nine saves.
Petty extended her consecutive games with a point streak to 71 and has now scored five or more goals in a game for the third time in the past four games. Ratliff-Kailbourne extended her consecutive games with an assist streak to six, while Kittell has now has at least one goal and one assist in each of the past three contests.
With the win Pitt snaps a three-game losing skid that included a pair of one-goal losses in the ACC play. The Panthers are now 4-4 on the season heading into an ACC road battle at Virginia Friday, March 18. (5 p.m. – ACC Network).
