TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Redshirt junior Ithiel Horton scored 17 points with five made threes in the second half alone while senior Jamarius Burton's four-straight baskets down the stretch propelled Pitt past Florida State, 56-51, Wednesday night at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center.
Horton finished the night with a game-high 25 points on 8-of-16 shooting and 7 made threes. Burton, after being held scoreless Monday at Virginia Tech, rebounded with a double-figure, 13-point effort. Graduate student Mouhamadou Gueye flirted with a triple-double before finding foul trouble late as he finished with six points, six rebounds and eight blocks.
Pitt (9-16, 4-10 ACC) led 7-5 through the first four and a half minutes of game action, with Horton scoring five of the seven points with one three-pointer in his first start of the season. Gueye forced Florida State (13-10, 6-7 ACC) to call timeout after blocking a shot and gathering a missed shot for a slam dunk on the other end to make it 11-5.
Both teams struggled to score after the timeout as a combined five points were totaled in just under a six-and-a-half-minute span. Florida State tied it at 18-18 with 3:38 left and again at 20-20 with 2:49 on the clock as both teams could not find a consistent rhythm. Femi Odukale made one of two free throws right before the half to give the Panthers a 21-20 halftime lead.
Pitt shot 25% (7-28) from the field and shot 2-of-13 (15.4%) from long range in the first half. Florida State shot just 17.9% (5-28) from the floor and held a slight 24-23 rebounding advantage.
Horton came out firing in the second half, converting his first four three-point field goals attempted, giving Pitt a 34-27 lead with 14:35 to play. Horton had 20 points and six made threes with four rebounds into the second media timeout.
Despite Horton's hot hand, the Seminoles stayed close with the Panthers, as Cam'ron Fletcher made a three of his own to cut the Pitt lead to 39-37 with just under eight to play. Both teams traded baskets and Pitt held a narrow 43-41 advantage with 4:22 in regulation.
It was Burton's turn to get the hot hand, as the guard made three-straight jumpers for the Panthers, with the third putting Pitt up 48-43 with 1:38 to play. The Seminoles got within three (49-46) but Burton made his fourth straight basket and again put the Panthers up by five with 33 seconds left.
Despite shooting 12-of-24 (50%) from the free throw line for the game, Pitt made five of its final six, including two from Horton with 0.9 seconds left to secure the victory, 56-51.
The Panthers finished the evening shooting 33.3% (18-54) from the field and 32% (8-25) from three-point range. Both teams finished with 41 rebounds.
Pitt returns home and hosts NC State Saturday, Feb. 12. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. on the ACC Network.
