Cold Shooting Haunts Pitt In Home Loss To Duke

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's basketball team (11-11, 2-9 ACC) fell at home Thursday night by the score of 54-39 to the Duke Blue Devils. Duke improved to 14-7 overall and 5-6 in the ACC with the win.
The Blue Devils got out to a quick lead Thursday as they netted the first two buckets of the game before Amber Brown finished off a layup to make it 4-2. Duke responded with the next six points to take the 10-2 lead at the first media timeout. Dayshanette Harris netted a pair of free throws out of the timeout to close out the scoring for Pitt as they trailed 15-4 through 10 minutes.
The Panthers started to make a run early in the second quarter as Brown finished off a layup and Rita Igbokwe grabbed an offensive rebound and finished off a layup to make the score 17-8 in favor of Duke. After a triple by the Blue Devils, Sandrine Clesca came off the bench and converted an and one layup and Taisha Exanor earned a steal and layup to make the score 20-13 in favor of Duke. Pitt got back within five, 23-18, after a deep triple by Destiny Strother and a jumper by Jayla Everett but Duke answered with a three-point play to finish the half and they took the 26-18 lead into the locker room.
The two teams got off to a slow start in the third as Brown and Emy Hayford each netted layups to send the game to the third quarter media timeout with Duke leading 33-22. Strother knocked down her second triple of the game to cut the Pitt deficit to eight, 35-27, with two minutes to play but the Blue Devils outscored Pitt 4-2 down the stretch of the quarter to take the 39-29 lead into the fourth.
Everett opened up the final quarter with a smooth jumper to cut the Pitt deficit to eight once again, 39-31, but the Blue Devils were able to use a 10-4 run to take the 49-35 lead at the final media timeout of the game. The Pitt offense couldn't get anything going across the final four minutes of the game as they fell, 54-39, in front of the home fans.
The Panthers had five players score six points in the loss as Brown finished her game with six points, eight rebounds and an assist. Everett netted six points and four boards while Hayford came off the bench and finished with six points, three rebounds and two assists in the loss. Igbokwe snagged eight boards (six offensive) while also notching four blocks while Exanor made the start and finished with eight rebounds as well.
As a team, Duke outrebounded the Panthers 48-46 but the Panthers were able to snag a game-high 18 offensive rebounds. Pitt turned the ball over 15 times while Duke committed 18 turnovers which turned into 16 points for the Panthers.
Lexi Gordon led the Blue Devils with 12 points and four rebounds while Shayeann Day-Wilson netted 10 points, six assists, three steals and two rebounds in the win.
