PITTSBURGH –Paige Petty extended her points streak to 68, with five goals and Madisyn Kittell added three points (two goals, 1 assist), but the Panthers (3-2; 0-1 ACC) late comeback fell short at Canisius (4-0; 0-0 MAAC).
The Panthers held the Golden Griffins to a season-low 12 goals and won the draw control battle (15-11), but were unable to convert on enough offensive chances to grab the victory. Pitt and Canisius were even on shots (27) and turnovers (21). The Panthers had the edge in free position opportunities, but only converted five out of 13.
In addition to leading the way with her five goals, Petty earned six draw controls and caused one turnover.
"Our focus this week is going to be on us," said head coach Emily Boissonneault after the game. "Overall, we are disappointed with our performance the last two games. We know that we are capable of so much more and are looking forward to a new 60 minutes this Saturday."
Canisius opened up the scoring early on Sunday, but the first quarter saw back and forth action and the score was tied at three at the conclusion. Petty scored two and goalie Paulina DiFatta grabbed three saves in the first fifteen minute quarter.
The Panthers were held to only one goal in the second quarter, a Carlie Leach score off of a free position attempt, and the Golden Griffins took a 6-4 lead into halftime.
In the third, Petty scored twice (11 and 12 on the season) and Kierin Ratliff-Kailbourne put her lone goal past the goalie. The three goals cut the deficit only to one thanks to two more goals by Canisius attacker Caroline Netti (five goals on the day).
The Golden Griffins added four unanswered goals to begin the fourth quarter, which brought the scoring run up to six. The Panthers were able to fight their way back and shrink the lead to two after goals by Leach, Kittell, and Petty, but never got closer and ran out of time.
Pitt is back in action next Saturday at Highmark Stadium when ACC foe Virginia Tech heads to Pittsburgh.
