
Pitt Drops Road Contest At Virginia On Sunday, 74-65

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The Pitt women's basketball team (11-16, 2-14 ACC) couldn't overcome a slow start on Sunday afternoon as they fell to Virginia, 74-65. Dayshanette Harris led the Panthers with 16 points and four assists in the loss.
Liatu King finished off her strong afternoon with her third double-double of the season as she posted 10 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and three blocks in 27 minutes of work. Off the bench, Destiny Strother netted 16 points while Amber Brown added nine points, three assists and two steals and Tracey Hueston finished with a career-high eight points in the loss.
The Cavaliers were able to get out to the 7-2 lead at the first media timeout as King netted a pair of free throws for the Panthers only points midway through the first. Out of the media timeout, Strother was able to knock down back-to-back triples to get Pitt within five, 13-8, but the Cavaliers finished the quarter with five straight points to take the 18-8 lead into the second.
The Pitt offense had a better start to the second quarter as Brown finished off a layup and Harris knocked down a jumper to make it 20-12 in favor of the Cavaliers early in the quarter. After a Virginia layup, King took over offensively as she finished off a three-point play and then knocked down another free throw to make it 24-18 in favor of the home side midway through the quarter. After a pair of triples by the Cavaliers, Harris netted her first three of the game to make it 30-25 in favor of Virginia with just over two minutes to go in the half. Hueston was then able to come off the bench and net her first three-pointer of the season to cut the Pitt deficit to four, 32-28, but the Cavaliers finished the half with four straight to take the 36-28 lead into the locker room.
Pitt came out of the locker room with two straight buckets as Brown finished off a layup and King netted a fast break layup after a great feed from Harris to force the Virginia Timeout with the Panthers trailing by four, 36-32. Over the next two minutes the Panthers were able to net three triples as Harris knocked down two and Hueston hit her second of the game to tie it up, 41-41. After a pair of Virginia free throws, Harris finished off a jumper and free throw to give the Panthers their first lead of the game, 44-43. The Cavaliers pushed their lead out to five with just over three minutes to play but Strother was able to hit her third triple of the game and a floater in the lane to give her 11 points and make the score 50-49 in favor of Virginia. After a Harris jumper gave Pitt the one-point lead, Virginia ended the quarter with a layup to take the 54-53 lead into the fourth.
Strother opened the fourth with a free throw to tie the game, 54-54, but the Cavaliers were able to respond with nine straight points to take the 63-54 lead and force Pitt into a timeout. Brown was able to make a layup and free throw to cut the deficit to five, 65-60, late in the fourth but the Cavaliers were able to make their free throws down the stretch to secure the 74-65 home victory.
As a team, Pitt was out-rebounded 33-31 and they lost the battle inside the paint 28-22. Pitt posted 16 assists while also turning 17 offensive rebounds into 15 second chance points in the loss.
The Cavaliers were led by Taylor Valladay who netted 30 points, seven assists and three rebounds while Mir McLean netted 16 points and eight boards in the win.
