
Strong Second Half Not Enough As Panthers Fall At Miami, 60-50

CORAL GABLES, FL – The Pitt women's basketball team (11-15, 2-13 ACC) dropped the middle game of a three-game road swing Thursday night to the Miami Hurricanes, 60-50.
Pitt was led offensively by Liatu King who netted 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists while Amber Brown finished with 11 points, three rebounds and three assists. Junior Rita Igbokwe cleaned the glass for Pitt as she racked up 13 rebounds (four offensive) in the loss.
Emy Hayford opened the scoring for the Panthers with a quick release triple just over a minute into the game to give Pitt the early 3-2 lead. The Hurricanes didn't waste any time getting the lead back as they were able to go on a 14-2 run to take the 16-5 lead late in the first. The Panthers closed out the quarter with the final three points as King hit a jumper in the lane and Hayford finished off a free throw to make it 16-8 in favor of the home team through 10 minutes.
The Panthers were able to get within seven, 20-13, a couple minutes into the second quarter as Dayshanette Harris knocked down a deep triple. Brown got her first bucket of the game right after the media timeout to make it 22-15 in favor of Miami but the Hurricanes ended the half with six straight to take the 31-16 lead into the locker room.
King started off the third quarter strong as she netted five of the first seven points in the quarter for the Panthers as they trailed the Hurricanes 36-23 just three minutes into the quarter. After a pair of Miami free throws gave them the 40-23 lead, the Panthers responded with six straight to force the Hurricanes into a timeout as Igbokwe, King and Maliyah Johnson each netted buckets to make it 40-29 in favor of the home side. After the timeout, Destiny Strother knocked down a corner three and King finished the quarter with a pair of free throws to cut the Pitt deficit to seven, 45-38, heading into the final quarter. Pitt outscored Miami 22-14 in the third.
The Panthers continued to fight their way back into the game to start the fourth as Brown finished off a three-point play and Igbokwe netted a free throw to make it 47-44 in favor of the Hurricanes with seven minutes to play. The Hurricanes wouldn't let the Panthers get any closer down the stretch as they went on an 8-1 run to take the 55-45 lead with three minutes to go. Sandrine Clesca netted a triple and King scored a bucket in the lane but it wasn't enough as the Panthers fell, 60-50.
As a team, the Panthers won the rebounding battle 41-35 but the Hurricanes outscored Pitt 24-22 inside the paint. Pitt shot 29.8% from the floor in the loss while Miami was able to shoot 40.4%.
Miami had four players score in double figures led by Ja'Leah Williams who netted 11 points, six rebounds and two assists. Jasmyne Roberts came off the bench and netted 10 points.
