PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh junior Sophie Yendell has been named the ACC Women's Swimmer of the Week, announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.
Yendell earns her first-career weekly conference after dominating the pool against some of the nation's top talent at the Minnesota Invite. Over the course of the four-day meet, the junior broke two school records in the 50-yard free (22.34) and the 100-yard fly (53.43), that she set just a year ago. Yendell broke the 50-yard free record during the prelims and matched her record in the finals, finishing third overall. She qualified for an NCAA B Cut in the 100-yard fly and finished the final day of the meet with a 19th-place finish in the 100-yard free.
The Tamworth, England, has etched her name in the Pitt record books as she now holds a total of three Pitt records in the 50-yard free, 100-yard fly and as a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay team.
Senior swimmer Cooper Van der Laan also earned the men's ACC Swimmer of the Week honor for his performance at the Minnesota Invite. This is the second time this season a member of the Pitt men's and women's swimming and diving programs have earned the conference honor in the same week. Jess Vega and Dylan Reed both earned the ACC Diver of the Week awards during the week of Nov. 15.
