MINNEAPOLIS – The women's swimming program sent 13 swimmers to the finals in four events as the Panthers completed the final day of competition at the Minnesota Invite, Saturday night.
Junior Sophie Yendell dominated the pool over the course of the four-day meet, breaking two school records in the 50-yard free (22.34) and the 100-yard fly (53.43). Yendell qualified for an NCAA B Cut in the 100 fly and finished the final day of the meet with a 19th-place finish in the 100-yard free.
"This was a very good week of racing for our team," said head coach Chase Kreitler. "Our plan for this invite was to get a short rest leading into the meet and work on racing really hard in the prelims to prepare for ACCs and NCAAs. We did a fantastic job of that! We had a lot of lifetime best swims and season best times, highlighted by Sophie Yendell's Pitt Records in the 50 Free & 100 Fly and Claire Jansen's record in the 50 Back leading off our 200 Medley Relay. We also had nine individual A Final swims throughout the course of the meet, which was very solid given the Top 5 nationally ranked teams that we competed against. We are really looking forward to our altitude training camp in Colorado Springs in a few weeks and the second half of the season!
Jacqueline Tinneny, Tess Mock, Abby Licht, Emily Bucaro, and Ece Tanriverdi took on the 1650-yard free in the afternoon. Tinneny (16:28.93) took 8th overall, Mock (16:40.22) grabbed 11th, Licht (16:57.36) placed 16th, Bucaro (17:03.69) finished 20th with Tanriverdi (17:13.60) right behind in 21st.
Starting the meet off strong for the Panthers, Claire Jansen (1:57.28) finished 6th in the 200-yard back. The freshman also qualified for an NCAA B Cut with a time of 53.56 and placed 7th overall in the 100-yard back during the third day of competition.
In the 200 back, Sophie Knepper (2:00.29) finished 26th, Yasemine Safargar (2:02.19) came in 28th and Holly Pringle (2:03.41) finished 30th.
The Panthers continued the evening with three individual qualifiers in the 100-yard free: Yendell, Kate Fuhrmann and Janelle Schulz. Yendell (50.18) took 19th, Fuhrmann (51.28) claimed 24th, and Schulz (51.31) finished 30th in the finals.
In the 200-yard breast, Angelina Messina finished in 16th-place with a time of 2:19.92. Maddie London (2:18.94) and Jayla Pina (2:20.13) finished 29th, 32nd, respectively.
Pitt continued to post strong swims in the 200-yard fly, the final individual event of the evening. Kate Bailey (2:00.36) came in 17th, and Olivia Yoo (2:03.02) took 20th, both dropping their times from the preliminary round.
Finishing the evening strong, the 400-yard free relay team of Yendell, Fuhrmann, Schulz and Jansen took 12th-place with a 3:22.95 time. Maya Gendzel, Tatum Detwiler, Avery McFaddin, and Bailey finished with a time of 3:26.57 and took 17th overall.
