Pina Finishes 24th at FINA World Championships

PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh freshman swimmer and 2020 Tokyo Olympian, Jayla Pina, represented Cape Verde at the 16th FINA World Swimming Championships in Melbourne, Australia, from Dec. 14-15.
Pina competed in three events over the course of the two days: 50-meter breaststroke, 100-meter breaststroke and 100-meter individual medley. The freshman finished 24th overall in the 100-meter individual medley with a time of 1:05.18. Pina swam a time of 1:12.72 in the 100-meter breaststroke, finishing 41st overall, and swam a 33.49 in the 50-meter breaststroke.
"Jayla did a great job representing Cape Verde and Pitt Swimming & Diving at the Short Course World Championships in Melbourne, Australia," said head coach Chase Kreitler. "She is building off her experience at the Tokyo Olympic Games, which was highlighted with a 24th place finish in the 100 IM. It is a huge accomplishment to crack into the top 25 at a World Championship! Our student-athletes and coaches are excited to continue to grow our team's presence on the International stage."
