
Mac Stout Wins Clarion Open, Pitt Puts Four in Finals

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team competed in the first official matches of the 2022-23 campaign on Sunday throughout a full day of action at the Clarion Open.
Pitt true freshman Mac Stout won an individual title at 197 pounds for the Panthers, bringing home the coveted Clarion Open champions helmet after securing victory in each of his first four collegiate bouts.
Starting his sixth season at the helm of his alma mater, head coach Keith Gavin's team took 18 wrestlers to the season-starting open tournament at Clarion on Sunday, including seven true freshmen making their competitive collegiate debuts.
Pitt also placed three other individuals in finals at the Clarion Open, with Colton Camacho (125), Tyler Badgett (149) and Reece Heller (184) each earning runner-up finishes in their respective weight classes.
Numerous other Panthers placed while facing opponents from Purdue, Navy, Clarion, Edinboro, Gardner-Webb, Brown, Kent State, Bucknell, Buffalo and others… including Nicholas Meglino (184) and Jake Slinger (HWT) in fourth, Jared Keslar (165) in fifth, Kelin Laffey (149) and Jack Pletcher (165) in sixth and Collin McCorkle (157) and Carson Miller (174) in eighth.

The Panthers will host their home opener at Fitzgerald Field House against Maryland on Friday, Nov. 18 with a 7 p.m. start before welcoming in-state rival Lehigh to Pittsburgh on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m.
Ranked No. 18 in the Preseason NWCA Coaches Poll, Gavin's Pitt squad returns numerous All-America contenders and features several transfers and freshman expected to contribute for the Panthers.
