PITTSBURGH – For the second time this season, redshirt junior Valeria Vazquez Gomez has been named ACC Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Vazquez Gomez was instrumental in securing a share of the 2022 ACC Championship for Pitt this week, stuffing the stat sheet with 33 kills on .375 hitting to go along with five aces (.63/set), 19 digs (2.38/set) and two blocks for a total of 4.94 points/set in wins over No. 13 Georgia Tech and Boston College.
Vazquez Gomez delivered her best performance as a Panther in Pitt's thrilling five-set victory over No. 13 Georgia Tech in the Petersen Events Center on Wednesday. The Puerto Rico native recorded a career-high in kills (22) and service aces (3) while notching her fourth double-double of the season (14 digs) and a pair of blocks. Her efficiency was remarkable, making her 22 kills on .347 hitting, including a masterful fifth set in which she posted five kills on eight swings without committing an error (.625 hitting) to help Pitt erase a 10-5 deficit to win the final set, 19-17.
Her 26.5 points scored against Georgia Tech (22 kills, three aces, one solo block and one block assist) tied Kayla Lund for the most points scored by a Panther in a single match since 2017 (Nina Markovic).
She followed that performance by leading the team with 11 kills on a clinical .435 hitting with two more aces and five digs against Boston College, a three-set sweep that would clinch a share of Pitt's fourth ACC Championship in the past six seasons.
This was the sixth ACC Player of the Week selection for Pitt this season, tied with 2018 for the most in a single season. Pitt is the only team in the conference with multiple winners of the award, with Courtney Buzzerio (three), Vazquez Gomez (two) and Serena Gray each earning the recognition.

Vazquez Gomez and the Panthers will hope to keep the positive momentum going into the NCAA Tournament this weekend. As a Top 16 team in the field, Pitt will host No. 7 seed BYU, Colgate and James Madison in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament inside the Petersen Events Center on Dec. 2 and 3.
No. 2 Pitt will play Patriot League Champions, Colgate, in the second match of the day on Friday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m. No. 7 BYU will take on Sun Belt Champions, James Madison, in the match before, starting at 4 p.m. with the winners playing in a second-round match at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3.
