
Panthers Drop First Game Of The Season To DePaul, 74-59

FORT MYERS, FL – The Pitt women's basketball team (5-1, 0-0 ACC) dropped their first game of the season Saturday afternoon to DePaul, 74-59. The Panthers were outscored by 14 in the second half in the loss.
The pace was high from the very first whistle as both teams exchanged points early on as Amber Brown opened the scoring with a layup after a great feed by Dayshanette Harris. DePaul made four free throws before Maliyah Johnson connected on her first of two triples in the quarter to give the Panthers the 8-6 lead. Aislin Malcolm banked in a deep triple and Johnson netted another triple to give Pitt the 16-15 lead at the media timeout. Harris finished off the scoring in the quarter with a jumper in the paint to give Pitt the 19-17 lead through 10 minutes.
Gabby Hutcherson opened the second quarter with a layup and Avery Strickland knocked down a triple to give the Panthers the four-point lead, 24-20, just over two minutes in. The Blue Demons fought back with a 6-0 run to take the 28-26 lead with three minutes to play but Hutcherson finished off a fadeaway jumper to tie it back up. Harris finished off the scoring with a layup and a DePaul half court heave that went in was waved off as Pitt went to the locker room trailing by one, 31-30.
The Blue Demons opened the third quarter with four straight before Marley Washenitz netted a pair of free throws to end the run. DePaul came right back with a 9-3 run to take the 44-35 lead midway through the quarter. Aislin Malcolm netted her third triple of the game to close out the scoring in the quarter as DePaul scored the final seven to take the 53-42 lead into the fourth.
DePaul opened the final quarter with a triple to push their lead out to 14, 56-42, and the Panthers weren't able to get much closer over the final 10 minutes. The Blue Demons continued to hit from deep down the stretch of the quarter as they secured the 74-52 victory over the Panthers.
Hutcherson led the Panthers in scoring off the bench as she netted 10 points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks in the loss. Malcolm came off the bench to score nine points and three rebounds while connecting on three triples in the loss. King finished off her fourth game with double digit rebounds with six points and a season-high 14 boards and two blocks.
As a team, Pitt shot just 33.8% from the floor while DePaul shot 36.4% while connecting on 10 triples in the win. DePaul won the rebounding battle 52-46 while also grabbing 23 offensive rebounds in the win.
