
Fourth Quarter Surge Powers Panthers To Fifth Straight Win, 72-62

FORT MYERS, FL – Behind a 30-point fourth quarter, the Pitt women's basketball team (5-0, 0-0 ACC) secured their fifth straight win in the opening game of the Fort Myers Tip-Off in Fort Myers, FL against the Towson Tigers, 72-62. Pitt trailed by as many as nine as they improved to 5-0 for the first time since 2016-17.
Dayshanette Harris led the Panthers in scoring in the win as she netted 14 points, five rebounds and three assists while netting a pair of triples. Maliyah Johnson finished off her game with 13 points, three rebounds and two steals while Marley Washenitz came off the bench and provided Pitt with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists in 16 minutes.
The Panthers got out to a slow start offensively as the Tigers raced out to the 11-2 lead before Avery Strickland finished off a fast break layup thanks to a great pass by Emy Hayford. Out of the media timeout, the Panthers offense woke up as Maliyah Johnson finished off a layup and free throw and another contested layup to send the game to the second quarter with Towson leading 12-11.
The offense early in the second quarter came from freshman Aislin Malcolm who netted back-to-back triples to send the Panthers to the media timeout in the second trailing 22-17 as the Tigers knocked down two triples of their own. Down the stretch of the quarter Washenitz came in off the bench and drilled a triple and Harris had a steal and layup to send the game to halftime with Pitt trailing 29-24.
Harris came out of the locker room with some energy for the Panthers as she netted a triple on the first possession and finished off a layup and free throw to cut the Towson lead to three, 37-34, three minutes into the third. The Tigers pushed their lead back to seven, 45-38, after Lance White was assessed a technical foul. Pitt responded with a Johnson fast break layup and Gabby Hutcherson jumper to cut the Towson lead to five, 47-42, at the end of the third.
Washenitz took over the game in the fourth quarter as she netted nine of her 11 points for the game across the final 10 minutes. She opened the quarter with a layup and Malcolm drained a corner triple to cut the Towson lead to two, 49-47. Midway through the quarter, Johnson finished off a layup to give Pitt their first lead of the game, 51-50. The Panthers never gave up the lead down the stretch as the offense scored 30 points in the quarter to earn the 72-62 victory. Pitt went 10-for-17 from the floor in the final frame to secure the win.
Liatu King had nine points and eight boards while Malcolm netted a career-high nine points and three rebounds off the bench. Hutcherson was impressive off the bench as she scored seven points, four blocks, two rebounds and two steals in 24 minutes of work.
As a team, the Panthers shot 43.5% from the floor and 43.8% from behind the arc while holding the Tigers to just 31.4% from the floor and 13.6% from deep. Towson held the 47-41 edge in rebounds while the Panthers had the slim 34-32 edge in paint scoring in the win.
