Panthers Post 80-64 Win Over William & Mary

PITTSBURGH -- For the second consecutive game Pitt used a dominant second half performance en route to an 80-64 win over William & Mary Friday evening at the Petersen Events Center. The Panthers overcame a four-point halftime deficit and outscored the Tribe 47-27 over the final 20 minutes of play.
Blake Hinson recorded his second double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Nike Sibande came off the bench to deliver 15 points, nine rebounds, four assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Pitt also got efficient double-figure scoring efforts from John Hugley IV (16) and Jamarius Burton (16) as the tandem combined to go 11-of-19 from the field.
Pitt used an 11-1 run to grab a 54-46 lead at the 13:51 mark in the second half. Sibande capped off the run with a fast break layup and Hugley IV had three assists, while passing out of the William & Mary post double defense, over the stretch.
Sibande continued to make an impact on both ends of the court as Pitt pushed its advantage to 73-53 with under seven minutes remaining with an offensive rebound putback. The Indianapolis, Ind., native scored 12 points, while adding four rebounds, two steals and a block shot during the 33-12 run.
Pitt led by as many as 21 points in the second half as it held William & Mary to 36.0 percent (9-of-25) shooting from the field, including 1-of-9 (.111) from three-point range. The Panthers controlled the glass with a 46-35 rebounding advantage, including a 27-17 edge after intermission.
The opening half was a back-and-forth affair featuring six lead changes and seven ties with William & Mary capitalizing on 24 points in the paint en route to a 37-33 edge at the break. The Panthers went scoreless over the final 3:30 of the half going 0-of-3 from the field with a pair of turnovers.
Hinson posted 10 points and eight rebounds in the opening half to lead the Pitt attack, while Burton and Hugley IV each added six points.
Ben Wight scored 13 of his game-high 24 points in the opening half for the Tribe. He finished 11-of-16 from the field and grabbed 11 rebounds in a losing effort. Anders Nelson added 12 points and six assists for William & Mary.
