PITTSBURGH—The No. 17 Pitt wrestling team opens its 2022-23 home schedule with an exciting weekend doubleheader at Fitzgerald Field House on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Coming off a 36-0 shutout of Cleveland State last week, the Panthers (1-0) return home to welcome Maryland (3-0) from the Big Ten Conference on Friday before hosting No. 13 Lehigh (3-0, 1-0 EIWA) on Saturday for an in-state rivalry top-25 showdown. Both duals are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
The first 250 fans at Friday night's match will receive a schedule magnet.
Saturday's dual with Lehigh – the 67th all-time wrestling matchup between the Panthers and Mountain Hawks – will serve as Pitt's Hall of Fame Recognition Night. Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro, a national champion during his career wrestling for the Panthers, and late great Pitt head coach Rande Stottlemyer will be honored as Class of 2022 inductees into the Pitt Athletics Hall of Fame.
Youth clubs and high school teams are eligible for free admission to Pitt wrestling home matches. Email the team's ticket office contact – jjoyce@athletics.pitt.edu – for more information.
Fans coming from Pitt's home football game on Saturday against Duke can also attain free admission to Saturday's wrestling match with Lehigh by showing their ticket from Acrisure Stadium.
The Panthers, led by head coach Keith Gavin in his sixth season at the helm of his alma mater, have six individuals ranked this week in the InterMat polls, led by No. 1 Cole Matthews at 141 pounds. Pitt's returning NCAA All-American will take the mat at Fitzgerald Field House for the first time since returning from the U23 World Championships in Spain as the nation's top-ranked wrestler in his weight class.
Pitt's other former All-Americans – Micky Phillippi (No. 8) at 133 pounds and Nino Bonaccorsi (No. 9 at 197 pounds) – both have big opportunities to move up the rankings if they would win their individual bouts against the Terrapins and Mountain Hawks.
Transfers Dazjon Casto (No. 11 at 157), Holden Heller (No. 14 at 165) and Reece Heller (No. 24 at 184) are each ranked and off to strong starts after joining the Panthers this past offseason.
Here is Pitt's probable lineup for this weekend's duals:

133: No. 8 Micky Phillippi (1-0)
141: No. 1 Cole Matthews (1-0)
