PITTSBURGH – Leah Pais lifted the No. 19-ranked Pitt women's soccer team (13-4-3) to a 1-0 win over Buffalo (15-2-4) Saturday in the 2022 NCAA Championship First Round at Ambrose Urbanic Field with a header goal in the 85th minute.
The victory was a historic one for the Panthers as Pitt earned a win in its first-ever NCAA Tournament game.
"It's just amazing. We keep breaking barriers," said Pais. "When you believe in each other and when you believe in the power of what you all can do on the field, you can make things possible. We believe in that every single day."
The triumph over the Bulls sets the No. 4-seeded Panthers up with a Second Round matchup against No. 5-seeded Georgetown (15-1-5) on Friday at 2 p.m. in Tallahassee, Fla. The Hoyas advanced to the Second Round by way of a 1-0 win over Hofstra on Saturday. The winner of the matchup between Pitt and Georgetown will take on either No. 1 overall seed Florida State or No. 8-seeded LSU in the Third Round next Sunday in Tallahassee.
Pitt dominated possession (57 percent) and held the advantage in shots (17-8) and shots on goal (7-4). It took the Panthers until five minutes remained in the game to break through with the winning goal, however, as they just missed breaking through on several tries throughout the contest. Pitt attempted 11 shots in the opening 45 minutes of play, putting five on goal.
Pais tallied her team-high eighth goal of the year off an assist by Anna Bout, who dished out her team-high tying seventh helper of the season.
"Overall, I'm really, really proud of the performance of the team, outside of not being a little more clinical around goal," head coach Randy Waldrum said. "I thought we dominated the possession and dominated the opportunities with all the looks that we had. We had a few mental lapses defensively, but, overall, I thought we held them in check from a defensive standpoint. Obviously, getting our first-ever postseason win, we're extremely excited about."
Five different Panthers logged multiple shots, with Landy Mertz leading the way with four, with three of her attempts coming on goal. Sarah Schupansky tallied three shots while Pais, Ellie Coffield and Samiah Phiri each logged two.
Senior goalkeeper Caitlyn Lazzarini made four saves in the shutout.
