PITTSBURGH – No. 7 Pitt (25-2, 15-0) extended its winning streak to 18 matches on Friday night, with a 3-0 sweep over Syracuse (11-14, 7-8). The Panthers controlled play from start to finish in a dominant three-set victory at the Fitzgerald Field House. The Panthers have now won 18 matches in a row. It is the third longest winning streak in the Fisher era and the longest since the 2019 season.
QUICK HITS
The Panthers spread the love well throughout the opening set as six different Panthers registered kills thanks to strong setting from Akeo and Fairbanks. Pitt broke the set open with a 7-1 run, extending a 12-8 advantage into a 19-9 lead. Sabrina Starks brought the set to an end with her second kill, resulting in a dominant 11-point victory for Pitt. Dalton led the way with three kills on four swings with Starks and Gray each adding a pair on .500 and 1.000 hitting respectively.
SET 2: PITT 25 – SYRACUSE 18
Syracuse continued to struggle from the service line in the second set, making five service errors for the second set in a row. With the Orange giving them five free points, the Panther slowly pulled away, using a 4-0 run to turn a 9-7 set into 13-7. Pitt never let up and eventually would take the set by seven points. Once again, balance was the name of the game as six different Panthers contributed to 13 total kills in the set. Courtney Buzzerio led the way, making four kills on .375 hitting while Browske and Valeria Vazquez Gomez held down the back row with four digs apiece.
SET 3: PITT 25 – SYRACUSE 15
The third set was more of the same as Pitt erased Syracuse's only lead in the match, 2-1, with a 4-0 run, using balanced attacking and an efficient offensive attack. The Panthers posted a .520 hitting percentage in the third with six Panthers registering multiple kills. Dalton posted five kills on 8 swings (.625 hitting) to lead the way as the five other Panther terminators (Vazquez Gomez, Buzzerio, Fairbanks, Starks and Gray) all posted two kills apiece. Cam Ennis entered the match as a setter, making three assists after recording a kill in the second set as an outside hitter. Browske held down the back row with three digs alongside Gray, who made all three of her digs in the final set.
UP NEXT
The Panthers have the rest of the weekend off before traveling to Louisville next Friday for a match against the No. 5-ranked Cardinals. The match will have heavy ACC implications as the Panthers will be able to clinch at least a share of an ACC Conference Championship with a win.
