Pitt Opens Exhibition Play with 103-51 Win Over Clarion

PITTSBURGH –Pitt opened exhibition play with a commanding 103-51 win over Clarion Saturday afternoon at the Petesen Events Center as six players scored in double figures and the team shot 59.4 percent (38-of-64) from the field on the day .
The Panthers topped the 100-point mark in exhibition play for the first time since a 101-33 win over LaRoche Oct. 29, 2011. Pitt has now won 38 consecutive exhibition contests and is 62-5 all-time in exhibition play.
Blake Hinson knocked down four three-point field goals and finished with a game-high 20 points, while Jamarius Burton added 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field. Nelly Cummings made his debut in a Pitt uniform filling the stat sheet with 16 points, four assists and six steals.
Graduate transfer Greg Elliott went 5-of-6 from the field, including 2-of-3 from three-point range, and closed with 12 points, three assists, and two steals, while Federiko Federiko came off the bench to post a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Helsinki, Finland, native went 5-of-5 from the field and added three blocked shots.
Sophomore Nate Santos also had a strong outing with 12 points, five rebounds and three steals. He knocked down a pair of three-point field goals
Pitt jumped out to a 50-19 halftime advantage as Burton and Cummings combined for 25 points and the Panthers went 17-of-29 (.586) from the field in the opening half. The Panthers used a 19-4 run and made 10-of-11 shots from the field at one point to extend the lead in the second half.
Four different Panthers knocked down two or more threes in the game as Pitt finished 12-of-28 (.429) from beyond the arc. Cummings (4), Elliott (3), Burton (3), and Guillermo Diaz Graham (3) each had three or more assists in the game as Pitt assisted on 21 of 38 made baskets.
In addition to forcing 21 turnovers and collected 15 steals, Pitt held visiting Clarion to 37 percent shooting from the field, including 26.7 percent (8-of-30) in the opening half of play. The Panthers scored 27 points off Golden Eagle turnovers and had a 23-2 advantage in fast break points.
Mador Seye led Clarion with 13 points and six rebounds.
Pitt returns to action with another exhibition game Wednesday, Nov. 2 against Edinboro. The Panthers open the regular season Monday, Nov. 7 against UT Martin (7 p.m. – ACC Network Extra).
