
Vazquez Gomez, Buzzerio Lead No. 10 Pitt over High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. – No. 10 Pitt (14-2, 4-0 ACC) rode a couple of excellent offensive performances from Valeria Vazquez Gomez and Courtney Buzzerio to a four-set victory over High Point on Sunday afternoon inside Millis Center in High Point, N.C. Both players hit 20 kills, marking the first time in the Dan Fisher era that two Panthers have recorded 20+ kills in the same match. Vazquez Gomez and Buzzerio combined for 40 kills on .381 hitting as Pitt secured its 14th win of the year, 25-18, 23-25, 25-14, 25-22.

SET 1: PITT 25 – HIGH POINT 18
The opening set started with strong push from High Point. With the home crowd behind them, HPU played well, making good passes and keeping the set close. The score was 16-15 in favor of Pitt when couple of kills from Starks gave the visiting Panthers the breathing room they needed. Fairbanks had a great run of serve, including an ace, sending Pitt on a 6-0 run. Pitt ended the set on an 8-2 scoring run to take the opener by seven. Vazquez Gomez led the offense with six kills on nine swings without committing an error. Pitt made 15 digs as a team with eight Panthers contributing to the total, led by three from Dalton.
SET 2: PITT 23 – HIGH POINT 25
The second set was as close as the first with 15 tie scores and three lead changes. Vazquez Gomez and Buzzerio contributed 11 kills combined with Buzzerio making six kills on seven swings. HPU took a 24-22 lead late, eventually winning the set after Vazquez Gomez defended match point with her 11th kill of the day.
SET 3: PITT 25 – HIGH POINT 14
Starks took things personally in the third set, making six kills on nine swings in a dominant performance. Pitt ended the set on a 12-3 scoring run, dismantling the High Point pressure and comfortably retaking the lead in the match, 2-1. Starks couldn't be stopped, making her six kills on .556 hitting while Vazquez Gomez added three more kills. Ennis' connection with Starks was noticeable, assisting on five of those six terminations. Ashley Browske entered the match to start the third, making a team high five digs.
SET 4: PITT 25 – HIGH POINT 22
HPU jumped in front, 7-4, to start the fourth set, only for Chiamaka Nwokolo to jolt Pitt back into the fray with a kill and a block on back-to-back points. Neither team led by more than two points for the remainder of the set with the lead changing hands three more times after that. Pitt pulled away late, erasing a 20-18 deficit with a the 20th kill from Vazquez Gomez before feeding Buzzerio for the final stretch to end the match on a 7-2 run. Buzzerio accounted for three kills in the final seven points of play as Pitt sealed its 14th win of the year.

Pitt returns home for practice before heading back on the road next weekend. The Panthers will take on Clemson (10-6, 1-3) and Georgia Tech (10-3, 3-1) next Friday and Sunday. The match against Clemson will be on ACCNX while the match against Georgia Tech will take place on ACCN.
