PITTSBURGH – No. 8 Pitt (18-2, 8-0) extended its winning streak to 11 matches on Sunday afternoon, sweeping Florida State (25-19, 25-18, 25-22) inside Fitzgerald Field House. Courtney Buzzerio led the way with 16 kills on .444 hitting as the Panthers earned their first sweep over FSU since 2017.
QUICK HITS
The Panthers got off to a quick start. With the alumnae watching, Pitt got out to a 18-8 start, out-hitting the Seminoles .643 to -.188 in a dominant display. FSU refused to go away quietly, going on a late 5-0 run to cut the lead to 23-19, only for Buzzerio to end things with a pair of kills. She would lead the match with six kills in the opening set, only one fewer than the entire FSU team. The Panthers had a rhythm on the right side as Buzzerio and Sabrina Starks delivered a combined nine kills on a combined .500 hitting. Ashley Browske made three digs in the set along with three blocks from Gray.
SET 2: PITT 25 – FLORIDA STATE 18
The second set was a back-and-forth affair as Pitt sandwiched two long scoring runs between a similarly long FSU rally. Pitt made a 7-1 run off the serving of Buzzerio and Dalton to take a 10-4 lead, only for FSU to respond with a 9-2 run, taking the lead, 13-14, and forcing a Pitt timeout. With the score tied, 16-16, it was Pitt who would put together the last rally of the set, winning nine of the next 11 points to end the set with a seven-point advantage. Pitt spread the ball well throughout the second as five Panthers finished with multiple kills. Vazquez Gomez and Buzzerio each made three as Fairbanks (6) and Ennis (4) kept the offense unpredictable. Dalton stood tall on defense, making four digs and a block while Gray added three more blocks to her dominant day at the net.
SET 3: PITT 25 – FLORIDA STATE 22
The Seminoles battled hard in the most evenly matched set of the day. The lead changed hands seven different times in the third as both teams showed off strong offensive play. The Panthers leaned on Buzzerio in this set and she delivered, making seven kills on 11 swings (.545 hitting) in a skillful display of transitional attacking. She would account for seven of Pitt's 15 kills this set while Vazquez Gomez and Cam Ennis stepped up their defensive effort, each making three digs. Buzzerio accounted for the final three Panther points, two kills and her 201st career block, alongside Gray.
