PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team begins Atlantic Coast Conference dual action on Friday night at Fitzgerald Field House when the No. 18 Panthers host Virginia at 7 p.m.
Tickets for the Pitt-Virginia dual are available on PittsburghPanthers.com.
The contest will also be streamed on ACC Network Extra and via the ESPN app.
The Panthers (5-3) are coming off their best dual victory of the season, having upset No. 6 Arizona State last Friday in the Fitzgerald Field House, 24-19. That win vaulted Pitt up to No. 18 in the NWCA Coaches Poll this week ahead of a challenging slate of conference matches.
The first of those duals is against the Cavaliers (3-2), who upset Pitt, 17-16, last year in Charlottesville. However, Pitt still leads the all-time series on the mat with Virginia, 7-2.
Friday's Pitt-Virginia dual will likely feature five ranked individual matchups.
Probables for both teams are available in the Pitt wrestling match notes.
For Pitt, No. 7 Micky Phillippi at 133 pounds and No. 9 Nino Bonaccorsi at 197 pounds will face familiar ranked opponents, as will No. 13 Jake Wentzel at 165 pounds, No. 21 Elijah Cleary at 157 pounds and No. 31 Gregg Harvey at 184 pounds.
Also ranked for the Panthers, No. 20 Cole Matthews at 141 pounds and No. 31 Gage Curry at 125 pounds have an opportunity to give the hosts a good start in this exciting ACC dual.
Pitt's fifth-year head coach Keith Gavin spent three years as an assistant under Virginia's Steve Garland and owns a 3-1 record against in former mentor since taking over the Panthers' wrestling program, including a perfect 2-0 mark in home matchups with Garland's Cavaliers.
